Fall migration is in full swing in October. Sparrows, kinglets, warblers and hawks stop in Central Park on their way south, joining the park's resident cardinals, blue jays, raccoons and squirrels. The Hallett Nature Sanctuary, a 4-acre woodland in the park's southeast corner, is one of the best places in New York City to photograph them up close.
Award-winning author and photographer Tony Northrup walks you through the sanctuary, helping you set up your camera for birds, find and approach animals without disturbing them, and capture sharp, close photos. It's part lesson, part Q&A, and part giving nature time to come to us.
When: Saturday, October 31, 1:00-3:30 pm
Where: Meet in front of the entrance to the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, near the southeast corner of Central Park. Tony emails detailed meeting instructions and a map the day before.
Group size: Up to 10 photographers. All skill levels welcome.
Bring: A camera and telephoto lens (longer is better, but a phone's telephoto lens works too), a charged battery, an empty memory card, and warm layers. No tripod needed.
Weather: We shoot in light rain. If heavy rain closes the sanctuary, you can switch to another date or get a full refund.
