About

Hi, I’m Tony Northrup. I photograph people, places and wildlife, and I’ve been doing it for more than three decades.

As a working photographer, I’ve produced commercial and editorial assignments in landscape, portrait, travel and product photography. My photographs have been published on book covers, magazine covers, album covers and billboards. I approach image-making as problem solving, using hands-on practice and careful study of the fundamentals to get consistent results.

I also teach. I’ve written dozens of books on photography, camera systems and image-processing software, for beginners and advanced photographers alike, and my YouTube channel has 1.6 million subscribers around the world. I’m also known for in-depth gear reviews and side-by-side testing that help people choose equipment.

In person, I present at conferences and teach studio and location workshops built around practical skills, workflows you can repeat, and improvement you can measure. My teaching is methodical and detail-oriented, and it’s meant to help photographers at every level progress efficiently.

I live in the Meatpacking District of New York City, where I balance client work, teaching and ongoing research into imaging technology and photographic technique.
